History: The Cobo Cup NASCAR Sprint Cup pool was created in 1997.
It started off as just a pool amongst friends in 1995. My brother in law Jim Pepper took me to my first NASCAR race at Michigan in 1995 and from there on I was hooked for life.
In 1995 I had 18 buddies that were part of a fun way to enjoy the races even though not all of them were being shown on T.V. ESPN covered some of the races and unless you had one of those big satellite dishes you were beat for seeing all 36 races. in 1996 it went up to 32 friends so I knew that NASCAR was becoming more and more popular in Canada.
For 2 years I kept the pool within the group of all my buddies. We had race parties that we would each host but in 1997 all my buddies wanted their friends to join as well. It had become a ton of fun with good food, drinks with a guys day or night out. The problem was, “how do I keep track of all these people, teams, money?” I mean it was supposed to be for fun. I wasn’t into the computer age as of yet (I didn’t even own a computer) so how was I to do it?
In came my buddy James Cook. He had a computer, was good with it and had the softwear to make running the pool a ton easier. Great! Along came the Cobo Cup. Jimbo – me, the guy with the idea and James Cook – my buddy with the computer. So we put the 2 names together – Jim(bo) and (Co)ok. Well Boco Cup didn’t sound right so we turned it around and came up with Cobo Cup.
The rest is, as they would say, HISTORY.
